Jacob Wandell > Miriam Olivia Wandell > Ada Clemina Hall > Horace C. Crofford > Virginia M. Crofford > Teresa Zaun Austin
Jacob was born in 1747 in Fishkill, New York. He married Catherine Stillwell in 1770, and they had ten children. He became a wealthy man and owned slaves.
Jacob enlisted as a Quartermaster in the military under General Washington in 1777, and was assigned to Colonel Spencer's regiment. His connections with the Dutch community enabled him to obtain food when the English army could not. Jacob participated in the battles of Brandywine (September) and Germantown (October), and was with the army at Valley Forge during that terrible winter of 1777-78. My great grandmother Ada Crofford wrote:
When Washington was at Valley Forge, my great grandfather seeing the soldiers were in much need of shoes went to Washington and told him that he had left a great quantity of hides in his tan-vat, and that they were, by that time, ready to be finished. He offered to go home and have the hides finished, and made up into shoes, by his slaves, one of whom was a good cutter, and several could sew leather. Washington gladly gave his permission. My great grandfather went home, returning in due time with two great wagons loaded with shoes.Jacob's own home was plundered during the war. According to Ada:
Great grandfather Wandell was rich when the revolution began. His home was between the lines much of the time and was plundered by both sides. They had got down to one cow. One day they saw a soldier departing with her. Great grandmother had twin babies in the cradle. Snatching them from the cradle she ran to the door with a baby on either arm. "Stop, stop!" she cried. "If you take her, my babies will die." The soldier stopped and looked at the babies a moment, then took the rope off the cow and went off.In 1780, Jacob was transferred to Colonel Goose Van Schaick's regiment where he served until the close of the war. He was in Virginia at the Battle of Yorktown, and was apparently acquainted with Lafayette. Many years later, when Lafayette visited America (1824), he recognized Jacob during a parade in NY City and embraced him.
When the Treaty was signed in 1783, Jacob's discharge was signed by George Washington. This relic is currently housed in Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh, New York.

I love reading these!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bridget! Perhaps I will eventually find a connection between our families. Would that be something?
ReplyDeleteDo you have a listing of Jacob's children?
ReplyDeleteHere is the information I have on Jacob's children:
ReplyDeleteJane, 1804-1850;
Mariamne, 1807-1886;
John Wesley, 1809- ;
Electa Woolsey, 1811-1855;
Pauline or Paulina, 1814-1888;
Charles Wesley, 1819-1875;
Ellen Ann Brown, 1821-1893;
Miriam Olivia, 1824-1908;
William Haight, 1825-1850.
Are you researching the Wandell genealogy?
yes. Paulina would be my 4thGreat Grandmother. Alexina married Charles Bundy. Their son Oliver C. married Ida DeMarnay Falk. Their son Otto married Gertrude Montgomery. My mother is one of their 6 children. Thanks for the lineage on Paulina's family.
ReplyDeleteI too am a descendant of Jacob Wandell and Catherine Stillwell. Do you have a source for them dying / being buried at Iona Island?
ReplyDeleteAlso, on Nicholas Stillwell, there's a book recently published about Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia (daughter of James I / VI and sister to Charles I) (The Correspondence of Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia, Volume I, Edited by Nadine Akkerman) that verifies Abigail Hopton and Nicholas Stillwell were both in her service and helped her escape to the Hague, if you are interested.
I do have a source for the place of death for Jacob and Catherine... it is probably in some of my family records that I have not uploaded to Ancestry yet. I will try to find it and let you know. Are you on Ancestry?
ReplyDeleteI knew about the relationship between Nicholas Stillwell/Abigail Hopton and Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia, and yes, I would very much be interested in the book! There was a story on the Hampton History Museum Facebook page recently about how all the place names in my area of Virginia were named after Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia - I had always assumed they were named after Queen Eliz of England! Elizabeth River, Elizabeth City - my ancestor Nicholas Stillwell, who had a plantation in York County, may have given those places their names! Exciting stuff.
The source for Jacob and Catherine's place of death is:
ReplyDeleteHistoric Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Family History of New York, Volume 2, by William Smith Pelletreau, Lewis publishing Company, 1907 - New York, p. 364.
Thanks for coming back. FYI on Catherine Stillwell's father.
ReplyDeleteTrolling on Google and Ancestry.com I came across the record of a court case in which the state of New York had been looking for the heirs of a Samuel Stilwell. When he died there was a significant portion of property in Manhattan that was left out of his will. Several years before the court case the City of New York, judging the property to have been abandoned, took it to build a school and set aside the funds that they would have paid for it. A search then began to find the heirs of Samuel Stillwell.
Although he was married, he had no biological children so his next of kin would have been the children and grand-children of his siblings. In the court documents there are the names of the families of his four brothers and one sister, Catherine Stilwell Wandell, all deceased. The listing of the heirs of Catherine Stilwell match all my previous records and are my ancestors. This confirms that this Samuel was Catherine's brother, but it doesn't mention who Samuel and Catherine's father was.
Doing further research, I found the probate records of the will of Samuel Stilwell. The will doesn't include Catherine Wandell (she was deceased by 1848) or any of her children, but in the course of the court proving the will, the executor was required to serve notice to all next of kin. As part of the documentation, Catherine's children and some grandchildren are listed along with their residences.
Again, we know that my Catherine and this Samuel Stillwell were siblings, but there is no mention of a father. Then I noticed the executor of the will was Samuel Stilwell Doughty and several people named Doughty were included in the will. There is a book I found online, The Life of Samuel Stilwell by Samuel S. Doughty. It seemed a bit of a coincidence so I read the book.
Samuel Stilwell and his wife had no children of their own but they took into their home as their own, the daughter of her sister who had been orphaned, Elizabeth Taylor. In 1808 she married Edward Doughty. Edward soon followed his adopted father-in-law into the profession of surveying and became his partner. Edward and Elizabeth had a son, who they named after Samuel Stilwell, Samuel Stilwell Doughty, the author and executor of the will. Since the Doughty's lived with Samuel and Elizabeth Stilwell for over 30 years, it is presumed the author of his biography, the executor of his will and his grandson by an adopted daughter would have intimate knowledge of his life.
According to this book, Samuel and Catherine Stilwell's father is William Stilwell as given in DeWitt Stillwell's book, History and Genealogical of One Branch of the Stillwell Family.
This seems to clear up this mystery.
Good catch! I haven't worked on the Stilwell branch of my tree in a while, but I will revisit this for sure. Thanks.
DeleteAlso, I've contacted Matthew Shook, Program Manager at the Palisades Interstate Park Commission and Doc Bayne a local historian who conducts hiking tours of Weygant / Iona Island and neither of them know of any cemeteries on the Islands. That's not to say they aren't buried there, just that there aren't any records.
ReplyDeleteAnd just to check, the children you listed above for Jacob Wandell are the the grandchildren of Jacob Wandell and Catherine Stillwell? The children on their son JAcob?
Yes, the children I listed are the children of Jacob Wandell and Miriam Haight, and therefore the grandchildren of Jacob Wandell and Catherine Stillwell.
DeleteOh, about the Iona Island... my source just said they died there. I'm not sure where they are buried.
